Team Selection

The field hockey team will consist of a maximum of 60 players, divided into a varsity squad and JV squad. Depending on how many players try out for the team this year, will determine sized of each team. This will be decided once we know how many players are trying out, and we will keep everyone informed as soon as this decision is made.

Team Selections based on:

During preseason, the coaches will be assessing each player's attitude, coach-ability, effort, fitness and skill. These factors will be considered when deciding if a player has made the team, and if so, on which team she will be placed. Any significant changes in a player's attitude, effort, or skill can always result in the possibility of mobility between teams, either upward or downward. The best players no matter their grade, previous team experience will make the varsity and junior varsity teams. This year is a new year so each girl needs to show the coaches why they deserve to make varsity or junior varsity.

Criteria for Making Varsity

Attendance at a minimum number of preseason practices is required (as described above); exceptions for extreme/unusual circumstances may be made at the discretion of the coaches.

SKILL: your skill level and your potential skill that will develop this preseason and season

EFFORT: how hard do you work ... do you give 110% every day and push yourself to improve ... do you work on your individual skills on your own time ... do you cheat on the runs/workouts when you think the coaches can't see you?

ATTITUDE: do you listen to the coaches ... are you willing to try new skills we teach ... are you respectful to all of the coaches and your teammates?

CONDITIONING: your level of conditioning and how much it improves during preseason, can you pass the fitness test?

Depending on the number of players we have tryout for the team, Varsity will likely consist of 18-20 players, JV of 20-22 players (these numbers are estimates).

Eligibility for returning SOUTH players: Please remember, you must pass spring classes AND have a 2.0 GPA from the spring term to be eligible to play a Fall sport (you can call the athletic office if you are unsure of your athletic eligibility).
